Brand and Culture Lead
Baltimore-born Jason C. Bass is an entrepreneur, community activist and father. Co-founder and CEO of Treason Toting Company, he designed and produced travel accessories manufactured in Baltimore. After raising capital and partnering with Under Armour, he exited Treason in 2018 and co-founded The Night Brunch, a pop-up dining series that breaks through social and racial silos. In 2020, Jason started Kiss Tomorrow Hello. He is working with UpSurge to develop stories and the Equitech brand.

Ecosystem Associate and Pathways Lead
Anand Macherla joined UpSurge to build the systems for mobilizing and measuring the Baltimore innovation ecosystem. Previously, he worked as a data analyst at T. Rowe Price in its Innovation Lab as a 2018 Venture For America Fellow. Anand is a social entrepreneur and looks to understand how business can be used to build sustainable, equity-driven solutions that balance prosperity for people and planet.  Originally from Albuquerque, he is passionate about outer space policy and hopes to publish his first book on the subject in 2022.

Hilary Roxe has spent more than 20 years working in and with mission-driven organizations, first as a journalist for international, national and local outlets, and later in communications and leadership positions at Catholic Relief Services, a global humanitarian agency, and at Johns Hopkins University. In 2018, she founded Ellipsis Advisory, a Baltimore-based strategic communications consultancy. She leads strategic initiatives and organizational development for UpSurge.

 

Vanessa Garrett

Administrative Support
Vanessa Garrett is an experienced healthcare compliance professional, educator and social entrepreneur. In 2018, Vanessa launched Velvet Yoniverse, a purpose-driven company that offers holistic feminine products and addresses social issues plaguing women. Vanessa is passionate about serving her community and helping chart a new course for Baltimore. She is working with Upsurge to provide administrative support and coordinate daily operations.

Claire Broido-Johnson is Managing Director of the Maryland Momentum Fund, a $10 million investment fund supporting early-stage companies affiliated with USM institutions. She is the founder of CBJ Energy and has been an entrepreneur in clean energy for more than 20 years.

Nick Culbertson is Co-Founder and CEO of Protenus, a leading healthcare compliance analytics platform. He’s an eight-year U.S. Army veteran and highly decorated U.S. Special Forces operator (Green Beret). Nick was awarded two Bronze Stars, one for extraordinary valor.

Isaac Kinde is head of research and innovation and a co-founder of Thrive. The technologies he co-invented with Thrive founders have subsequently enabled the earlier detection of several different cancers and other genetic diseases from a wide variety of clinical specimens.

Justin Label is the Managing Director of Inner Loop Capital, a Baltimore-based seed-stage venture capital firm focused on founders in the greater Washington, D.C. region. Justin has been working in venture capital since 1999, including 10 years at Bessemer Venture Partners in Silicon Valley.

Mary Miller is a former senior official in the U.S. Treasury Department and executive at T. Rowe Price. She is a senior fellow at the Johns Hopkins 21st Century Cities initiative and a director on the boards of the Silicon Valley Bank and The Jeffrey Company. Mary is a board member of the Baltimore Neighborhood Impact Investment Fund and active in a wide range of other local activities.
