Enabling Action through Data and Insights

Startup Data

Since January 2025, UpSurge has been building a first-of-its-kind database to track and report on private, for-profit companies in the Baltimore Region.

The UpSurge Startup Database

We built the MVP around Baltimore startups tracked by UpSurge and enriched by data from external platforms like LinkedIn, PitchBook, Crunchbase, and Tracxn. We then partnered with regional organizations (see the validation partner list below) to validate the database, ensuring accuracy across industries and neighborhoods. With their feedback, we launched Version 1 (V1) and are now focused on expanding the data.

Credibility

Every data point in the UpSurge startup database is tied to a clearly cited source, giving users full transparency into where each piece of information comes from.

Measuring Growth

We found that many critical data points for assessing growth are missing or misrepresented in national databases. To address this gap, we are working closely with local sources, trusted partners, and founders to capture the most accurate picture of the region’s companies.

What's the Purpose?

This database will give stakeholders, including policymakers, investors, and ecosystem partners, a reliable and up-to-date view of Baltimore’s startup and private company landscape. For example, we can quickly generate reports such as: Which cybersecurity companies in Howard County have raised more than $10M in venture capital?

Reports We Can Produce:

  • Acquired: Companies acquired within the last 5 years
  • Product: Companies currently in clinical trials
  • Industry Label: Companies producing cybersecurity products
  • Specialties: Companies offering AI solutions
  • County: Companies located in Howard County
  • Equity Capital: Companies that have raised more than $10M in equity
  • Non-dilutive Capital: Companies that have raised more than $5M in non-dilutive capital
  • Raised This Year: Companies that raised more than $1M in total funding this year

The UpList

In the near future, we aim to use this data to answer a key question: Which startups and companies are showing the highest growth and potential? To achieve this, we are developing industry-aligned and geographically focused frameworks that will allow us to identify and highlight the organizations demonstrating strong growth and promise.

In the summer of 2025, we brought together a group of experts in venture capital, startups, and technology from VC funds, banks, and consulting firms to distill industry best practices and key indicators for identifying companies positioned to scale globally, achieve unicorn status, or exit within the next 3–5 years. With their guidance, we will publish the region’s first UpList by year’s end.

What’s Next?

UpSurge is focused on expanding the database by:

  • Adding more local and direct data sources
  • Strengthening relationships with founders and regional partners
  • Incorporating ongoing feedback from stakeholders
  • Updating the database at a regular quarterly cadence

This database is a dynamic tool designed to evolve with Baltimore’s startup ecosystem.
