Baltimore is a Tech Hub!
The EDA Tech Hubs designation shined a much-deserved spotlight on our ever-growing tech ecosystem and startup community. But insiders have always known the advantages of building in Baltimore:
- Extraordinary Talent: Baltimore has an abundance of diverse innovators and creators with a higher concentration of college graduates from its premier institutions in technical fields like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Recently, Baltimore was ranked the #2 best U.S city for recent college graduates due to wages, affordability, and hiring.
- Dedicated Funding: While Baltimore has a growing venture capital ecosystem, especially for healthcare, cybersecurity and life sciences, VC firms like the Conscious Venture Partners, W Ventures, Abell Foundation and TCP Capital are also investing in and inviting more tech startups to become Baltimore-based companies. RareBreed Ventures, Latimer Ventures, PTX Capital, Ecphora Capital and Blackbird BioVentures have all invested in Baltimore startups.
- Opportunities: We have a vibrant startup ecosystem that offers connected networks, and opportunities to build strong companies with accelerators like Conscious Venture Labs, Baltipreneurs, Techstars and ventures studios like Early Charm and Early Works providing commercialization resources, mentorship and go-to-market strategy.
- Living and Operating Costs: The housing market in Baltimore is more affordable compared to cities like Washington, D.C., or New York and Baltimore offers a lower cost of living and an abundance of affordable office spaces for startups.
- Vibrant Community: Baltimore is an ecosystem that values community and relationships. Working in Baltimore means more than just work-life balance, we value work-life harmony!
- Proximity to Industry: Baltimore is close to key infrastructure such as the Federal Government in DC, NOVA, Bio-Health Capital Region, major Universities, and has easy access by plane and train to major industry hubs in New York, Philadelphia and Boston and even Europe and the Western U.S., which can be critical to business operations for startups in many sectors like Healthcare, Cybersecurity and GovTech.
It’s no wonder that so many of the startups that spend time in Baltimore have chosen to establish a base in our ecosystem. Startups from the Techstars Equitech Accelerator cohorts like Plainr, Sparen Homes, EQL Finance, Athlytic, Azadi Health, and TechRow have committed to building their business right here in Baltimore. Growing startups like California-based RoboMart have moved operations to Baltimore to reap the benefits that our ecosystem has to offer.
Many startups like AKALA, ReviewTailor, Acrylic consider Baltimore a strong market and are expanding their operations here as well. All evidence points to the fact that the world is catching on to what we already know… Baltimore is a Tech Hub!
